Preview — Chapter 01: The Way the Mind Works

The mind is not a blank slate waiting to absorb information; it is a pattern-making system that organizes data into existing structures. As experiences accumulate, the brain creates shortcuts—stable patterns that allow for faster decision-making. This efficiency, however, comes at a cost: once a pattern is formed, it becomes difficult to break away from it, even if it no longer serves the situation well. These patterns often determine how we interpret information, solve problems, or interact with the world. But because the mind seeks certainty, it tends to filter out inputs that don’t fit the dominant patterns. In effect, this causes us to miss out on fresh perspectives and creative possibilities. Lateral thinking aims to deliberately disrupt these ingrained circuits to make way for new arrangements of thought. Traditional education and problem-solving approaches emphasize logic and correctness, reinforcing the same paths repeatedly. This makes us more efficient but less innovative. In contrast, creativity demands the ability to explore tangents, provoke disruptions, and entertain “wrong” directions—not to arrive at errors, but to stumble upon useful alternatives. Just as a river carves deeper into its course with every flow, the mind digs deeper into the same grooves over time. Lateral thinking introduces intentional detours. These detours may seem illogical at first, but they can uncover novel connections that vertical thinking alone would never reach. The goal isn’t to discard logic, but to supplement it with play, exploration, and possibility.
